Symptoms of HIV: The 3 Phases

Diagram showing the 3 phases of HIV infection
HIV infection progresses in three main phases. Recognizing the symptoms at each stage allows for early diagnosis and better care.

The 3 Phases of HIV Infection

11. Primary Infection (Acute Phase)

Occurs 2 to 6 weeks after infection. Symptoms resemble the flu: fever, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches, swollen glands. These symptoms disappear after a few weeks, even without treatment.

22. Asymptomatic Phase

The virus is present but there are no symptoms. This phase can last several years. The person feels healthy but can still transmit the virus.

33. Symptomatic Phase (AIDS)

The immune system is weakened. Symptoms: persistent fever, weight loss, chronic diarrhea, infections, skin problems. Without treatment, this phase can be life-threatening.

Early testing and treatment can stop the progression of the disease and allow a person living with HIV to lead a normal life.
