Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Symptoms can appear a few days to several months after transmission.

Genital symptoms

Female

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Bleeding between periods or after sex
  • Pelvic pain during intercourse
  • Burning sensation when urinating

Male

  • Clear or purulent urethral discharge
  • Pain or swelling of the testicles

Anal symptoms (if transmitted anally)

  • Rectal pain or discharge
  • Bleeding
  • Anal itching or discomfort

Screening

Medical exam: urine sample.

Screening is very useful to prevent infertility in both sexes and infections of the testicles, uterus, fallopian tubes, and even arthritis or conjunctivitis. If you had a risk exposure, get tested — chlamydia is often asymptomatic.
