Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea (caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae) is a sexually transmitted infection spread through sexual contact (vaginal, anal, oral) or during childbirth.

Symptoms

In men

  • Unusual penile discharge
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Pain or swelling of the testicles
  • Prostate infection

In women

  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Vaginal discharge or bleeding
  • Lower abdominal (pelvic) pain
  • Infection of the uterus and fallopian tubes

Anal symptoms (if transmitted anally)

  • Rectal pain or discharge
  • Bleeding
  • Anal itching or discomfort

Screening

Even without symptoms, infected people can transmit gonorrhea to partners. Anyone at risk should get screened. Screening is performed by qualified health personnel.

Gonorrhea screening helps prevent complications and onward transmission.

Treatment

Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Prevention

  • Use condoms (external or internal) for every sexual act
  • Get tested after any risk exposure
  • Inform sexual partners so they can get tested and treated
