Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Illustration 1

There are two common types: HSV-2 (most often linked to genital herpes) and HSV-1 (usually oral but can cause genital infection after oral sex).

Virus types

  • HSV-2: most frequently involved in genital herpes.
  • HSV-1: usually associated with oral herpes but can cause genital lesions.

Symptoms

  • Fluid-filled blisters that become painful sores on the genitals or anus.
  • Painful urination often associated.
  • Symptoms usually appear 2–20 days after transmission.
  • Symptoms can reappear years later after initial infection.

Protect yourself and your partner(s) after any risk exposure.

Modes of transmission

  • Sexual contact: direct contact with vesicles on vulva, penis or anus, or via genital secretions.
  • Mother to child (pregnancy and/or delivery).
  • Direct contact (kissing, shared objects...).
