There are two common types: HSV-2 (most often linked to genital herpes) and HSV-1 (usually oral but can cause genital infection after oral sex).
Virus types
- HSV-2: most frequently involved in genital herpes.
- HSV-1: usually associated with oral herpes but can cause genital lesions.
Symptoms
- Fluid-filled blisters that become painful sores on the genitals or anus.
- Painful urination often associated.
- Symptoms usually appear 2–20 days after transmission.
- Symptoms can reappear years later after initial infection.
Protect yourself and your partner(s) after any risk exposure.
Modes of transmission
- Sexual contact: direct contact with vesicles on vulva, penis or anus, or via genital secretions.
- Mother to child (pregnancy and/or delivery).
- Direct contact (kissing, shared objects...).
